Growth Mindset: The Sleeper

One thing I knew is everyone is an individual. However, a thing I learned is that it is time to start perceiving people that way. It is easy to judge someone by their actions but it is difficult to understand their actions without the context. One thing I am curious about is, how many times have I judged someone without knowing them? It is probably too many that I would be ashamed. I would like to take this curiosity and interact with people more. I don't want to just talk to people, but I want to get to know them more. I want to try and understand, why might someone do this or why might someone do that? Humans are complex creatures. It is time for more people to realize that there is more than one path and there is more reasons why than the answer, "just because"

Growth Mindset: The Interview

I knew that growth mindset is an integral part of the people who are successful rather than those who had fixed mindsets. I try to obtain a growth mindset more and more with each challenge I face. I think it is important to have a growth mindset as soon as possible.
I learned that those who are praised by their intelligence are less likely to develop a growth mindset. Those kids do not want a challenge. They are more likely to give up. I have seen that on occasion. I have a friend who is smart but in the end, he decided that college was not for him. I wonder now if it was because he had a fixed mindset.
I am curious of the growth mindset. I hope to explore this concept more by applying myself in my studies with the idea that I can do it and that it just takes time to understand the material. I think the growth mindset provides a framework of self motivation and self confidence that I can succeed. The results will be my GPA at the end of the semester.

Growth Mindset: Purpose

The one thing that the graphic confirmed that I knew already was the continuum of purpose is self awareness. It is important to be self aware to know what your purpose is. It is important to explore for personal reasons on what your purpose is.

One new thing that I learned that I did not know before was conformity. I did not think conforming would be a part of purpose. I understand now that being in individual is important but conforming to the rules and guidelines is important to follow your purpose. Before becoming self aware, a step to understanding what your purpose is to conform and utilize your time to decide what your purpose is. It sounds like it is limbo for those who do not know what they want to do.

The one thing that I am curious to explore is the making a difference portion. I would like to make a difference with whatever purpose I decide to pursue. I want to lead a meaningful life. In order to act on that curiosity, I am beginning to take the steps towards what I believe is my purpose in life which is to help others. I plan on being a pharmacist. I would like to help others health wise and be a listening health care provider.

Growth Mindset: Creativity

The graphic confirmed to me that creativity is comprised of mindfulness, resourcefulness, and action. A new thing I learned that creativity is caused by confidence. But I do understand how confidence is a part of creativity. It takes confidence to share creative idea and go out of the box. I am curious to explore humility. Humility is like making mistakes during the creative process. Humility is also something that has to be experienced in the moment rather than doing it anytime. What I want to do to act on it is to embrace humility more. I feel having humility creates a more humble person. Creativity is important to have an innovative and thoughtful person. I did not think that creativity was comprised of all these qualities. I never really think about qualities that go into characteristics. It is interesting to see.

Growth Mindset: Quotes

"WHY NOT?

The way I would like to use "Why Not?" is in the sense of saying yes. Why not make time to see your friends? Why not make a random trip? Why not do something different than the usual routine? I think it is important for us to not get too focused on ourselves but live life with others. It is a lot more fun and if you are actually engaged with people you'll learn more about yourself along the way."

I would consider myself as a timid person. I agree with this quote. I have been trying to implement more "why not?" into my lifestyle. Sometimes, students focus too much on academics and forget to focus on their mental wellbeing. It is important to find a balance between work and play. Humans are social creatures, so it is important to interact with others and gain the social interactions. Also, when I look back on my life, I want to be able to remember memorable experiences that I have made with others and the laughter that we have shared.

"CHEERS TO MISTAKES

This reminds me to not worry about the mistakes I made, currently make and will make in the future, because each mistake is worthy of celebration as it is a stepping stone towards success."

I think mistakes are important to growth. If you never fail then you are not able to correct something. Also, I think mistakes are important in building grit. After overcoming a mistake, the satisfaction of succeeding is more meaningful than succeeding the first time. For all the mistakes I make, I learn to not make the same error. Cheers to mistakes!

Growth Mindset: Strongest Impact

The strongest growth mindset that occurred for me was during winter break. I decided to go snowboarding for the first time with my cousins, Christine and Phillip, at Mammoth Mountain. Christine was a expert skier. Phillip and I were newbies, so we signed up for snowboarding lessons for the first two hours of the day. We spent it falling and rolling down a small hill. After our lessons, we ate lunch at the cabin and then I took a nap. Once I woke up, I decided to go back to the small hill and practice while Phillip decided to stay home. When I was at the small hill, Christine convinced me to go on an actual run. Everything about the run was difficult.

Number 1: getting off the chairlift was a struggle.

Number 2: getting buckled was a struggle.
Number 3: going down was a struggle.
Number 4: falling was a struggle.
Number 5: getting up was a struggle.
Number 6: repeating 3 - 5 was a struggle.

The process of getting up from falling down was more mentally challenging than physically challenging. It was hard to get up when I knew I was going to fall. But, small achievements were something I strived for. The goals I strove for was to change directions and stay up longer. I never had to persevere through something so physically and mentally demanding. I never played sports or had to push myself.

The next day, Christine, Phillip, and I went to the side of the mountain with the main lodge. The slopes were much easier than the day before. I didn't notice my improvement until I snowboarded with Phillip. My extra practice had cushioned me more for my learning curve, whereas Phillip was me on day 1. Fortunately, the run I did on day 1 was 10x harder than the run we ran that day. The falls were a much softer. I was very elated when I finished that run. In many ways, I felt like I couldn't snowboard. However, in the end, I feel like I can conquer anything. I look forward to learning how to snowboard better and possibly skiing.

The mindset that I picked up from snowboarding was to get up again. Although the journey is tough, getting up is half the battle. The feeling of satisfaction at the end of the journey is more rewarding the more times I fell, because it is a sign that I could do it. It is very much applicable in school life. I had a bump in the road with my other courses, but I plan on getting back up and pushing through.

Growth Mindset: Focus

7 Key Maxim of a Mindset Focused on Growth by Martin Zwilling

Focusing, in general, can be a hard task to accomplish. Martin Zwilling shares seven steps on focusing on growth:

  1. A need to learn from customers, rather than educate them.
  2. Develop market insights and a growth vision far beyond today.
  3. Don't try to solve all the world's problems in one solution.
  4. Foster leadership and accountability at all levels of the company.
  5. Partnering with customers, rather than acting as a supplier.
  6. Replace "push" marketing with value-added "pull" marketing.
  7. Manage by metrics rather than by crisis and emotion.
Although, most of the key maxims are business related, it can be applied to more relatable topics. Here is my version of these key maxims in more broad statements.
  1. Learn from others around you.
  2. Look forward to the future.
  3. Don't try to solve all the world's problems in one solution.
  4. Be an accountable leader.
  5. Befriending everyone is better than being unknown or an enemy.
  6. Don't push people, but pull them in by intriguing ways.
  7. Think logically about your decisions.
Some of my renditions do not convey the full messages that Zwilling's did but I think it can still be applicable in various situations. It is important to keep these maxims in mind to be able to grow. I think 1 is a very important statement. As humans, we are creatures who learn by watching and doing. I think everyone has something to teach to the world. 2 is also a very important statement. In order to go, we must look toward the future. Looking in the past could hold us back from our potential. But reminiscing is different from being held back in the past. 7 is important step. Decisions should not be taken lightly and be thought out thoroughly.

Growth Mindset: L.O.V.E.

Initially, it was difficult to create an acronym with a Growth Mindset theme. I wanted the acronym to have meaning such as love. I also tried worth and work. It was always the last letter that I was stumped on! Love is meaningful. It is also very versatile. You can love your friends, family, pets, and others but at different levels. It is an adaptable word. The saying "Let Optimism Veer Everything," means to make positive decisions and not negative ones, such as those that stem from jealousy, personal gains, or revenge. It also means that when things are tough, to keep going. It is to have an optimistic mindset to continue on the treacherous journey called life.

Growth Mindset: Different Intelligence

I think Howard Gardner is correct in his observations that there are different types of intelligence. I have never thought of intelligence being in these categories. I have always thought of intelligence as two sections: book smart and life skills smart. The different factions makes sense and goes with the understanding that people are complex creatures. Each person is unique with their own sets of intelligence. Personally, I think I have some of the subcategories in the multiple intelligence but not all. For example, in the visual-spatial intelligence, I am proficient in seeing, drawing, and coloring. But, I am not good at visualizing or mapping. I think the intelligences that I will be able to grow in the classes I am taking this semester are visualizing, teaching/collaborating, and reading. In my Anatomy class, we are working on cadavers, so it is important to be able to visualize the area that is going tobe cut before making the incision to avoid any damage to important structures. In lab we are placed in groups, so it is also important for us to collaborate and teach each other the various structures in the body. In this class, since we read and write a lot, I think my linguistic skills will improve by the end of the semester. In the future, I would most like to grow my musical intelligence. I have always wanted to play an instrument but I have never been able to stick with it. My goal in the future is to be able to play the piano. I think practicing the instrument and setting time to look over the notes is a good way increase the intelligence in the area. It will definitely take dedication and passion to improve. Although it may be hard, it will be worth it in the end!

Growth Mindset: Passing it on

I shared the Growth Mindset with one of my oldest friends, whom I have known since elementary school. We have seen each other grow from adolescents to adults. My friend had never heard of the growth mindset idea yet. He was quite intrigued in the concept. The key ideas, that I believe, of growth mindset is 1) failing is good, 2) learn from successes and failures, and 3) keep going. I tried to reiterate that not everyone is perfect. It is common to fail, but from that failure, you can learn and implement changes to better oneself. My friend has failed one of his classes twice. From that, I asked him, what did you do before? What can you change to do better? We were able to tweak his study habits and hopefully he will pass with flying colors. The growth mindset is the idea that, what we have, we can use and expand.

Attempting Growth Mindset

Prior to this, I have not heard of Carol Dweck or the idea of Growth Mindset. From exploring this topic, I have realized that I am between the Now and the Yet. I possibly lean more towards the Now but I am trying to make my way to Yet. Recently, I learned how to snowboard. The mindset that I had to develop was to challenge myself in aspects that were not normally exercised. I had the mentality of, "I have not yet learned this activity, but I will." The challenges I have at OU is that I know that I can do better within my classes. I have difficulty in placing more effort within my studies. Every semester, I have a school years resolution to improve my ways of studying and deepen my well of knowledge.

I would personally like to learn more about the Growth Mindset and hopefully implement it within my daily life. My learning goals for this semester is to not allow my difficult classes intimidate me, but to allow it to motivate me. Another goals is to not underestimate the classes that seem easy and treat it under the same caliber as my other subjects. Growth Mindset is a journey I intend to embark on.
